    Catalytic pyrolysis of Laminaria japonica over nanoporous catalysts using Py-GC/MS

    The catalytic pyrolysis of Laminaria japonica was carried out over a hierarchical meso-MFI zeolite (Meso-MFI) and nanoporous Al-MCM-48 using pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The effect of the catalyst type on the product distribution and chemical composition of the bio-oil was examined using Py-GC/MS. The Meso-MFI exhibited a higher activity in deoxygenation and aromatization during the catalytic pyrolysis of L. japonica. Meanwhile, the catalytic activity of Al-MCM-48 was lower than that of Meso-MFI due to its weak acidity

    Depression and suicide risk prediction models using blood-derived multi-omics data

    More than 300 million people worldwide experience depression; annually, ~800,000 people die by suicide. Unfortunately, conventional interview-based diagnosis is insufficient to accurately predict a psychiatric status. We developed machine learning models to predict depression and suicide risk using blood methylome and transcriptome data from 56 suicide attempters (SAs), 39 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 87 healthy controls. Our random forest classifiers showed accuracies of 92.6% in distinguishing SAs from MDD patients, 87.3% in distinguishing MDD patients from controls, and 86.7% in distinguishing SAs from controls. We also developed regression models for predicting psychiatric scales with R2 values of 0.961 and 0.943 for Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression???17 and Scale for Suicide Ideation, respectively. Multi-omics data were used to construct psychiatric status prediction models for improved mental health treatment

    Air-stable n-type operation of Gd-contacted carbon nanotube field effect transistors

    We report air-stable n -type operations of the single-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistors (SWNT-FETs) fabricated with Gd electrodes. Unlike previously reported n -type SWNT-FETs, our devices maintained their n -type operation characteristics in ambient atmosphere for more than two months. The shallow Gd films with a thickness below 20 nm are corroded by environmental oxygen, whereas the well-contacted Gd-SWNT interfaces underneath the thick Gd layers are protected from contaminations by air molecules. Theoretical studies based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations confirm that Gd layers have an excellent binding affinity to the SWNTs.open8

    Positioning of the Fermi Level in Graphene Devices with Asymmetric Metal Electrodes

    To elucidate the effect of the work function on the position of the Dirac point, we fabricated graphene devices with asymmetric metal contacts. By measuring the peak position of the resistance for each pair of metal electrodes, we obtained the voltage of the Dirac point VgDirac (V) from the gate response. We found that the position of VgDirac (V) in the hybrid devices was significantly influenced by the type of metal electrode. The measured shifts in VgDirac (V) were closely related to the modified work functions of the metal-graphene complexes. Within a certain bias range, the Fermi level of one of the contacts aligned with the electron band and that of the other contact aligned with the hole band

    Construction and Evaluation of a Korean Native Microbial Consortium for the Bioremediation of Diesel Fuel-Contaminated Soil in Korea

    A native microbial consortium for the bioremediation of soil contaminated with diesel fuel in Korea was constructed and its biodegradation ability was assessed. Microbial strains isolated from Korean terrestrial environments, with the potential to biodegrade aliphatic hydrocarbons, PAHs, and resins, were investigated and among them, eventually seven microbial strains, Acinetobacter oleivorans DR1, Corynebacterium sp. KSS-2, Pseudomonas sp. AS1, Pseudomonas sp. Neph5, Rhodococcus sp. KOS-1, Micrococcus sp. KSS-8, and Yarrowia sp. KSS-1 were selected for the construction of a microbial consortium based on their biodegradation ability, hydrophobicity, and emulsifying activity. Laboratory- and bulk-scale biodegradation tests showed that in diesel fuel-contaminated soil supplemented with nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), the microbial consortium clearly improved the biodegradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons, and all microbial strains constituting the microbial consortium, except for Yarrowia survived and grew well, which suggests that the microbial consortium can be used for the bioremediation of diesel fuel-contaminated soil in Korea

    Optimization of Airport Surface Traffic: A Case-Study of Incheon International Airport

    This study aims to develop a controllers decision support tool for departure and surface management of ICN. Airport surface traffic optimization for Incheon International Airport (ICN) in South Korea was studied based on the operational characteristics of ICN and airspace of Korea. For surface traffic optimization, a multiple runway scheduling problem and a taxi scheduling problem were formulated into two Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) optimization models. The Miles-In-Trail (MIT) separation constraint at the departure fix shared by the departure flights from multiple runways and the runway crossing constraints due to the taxi route configuration specific to ICN were incorporated into the runway scheduling and taxiway scheduling problems, respectively. Since the MILP-based optimization model for the multiple runway scheduling problem may be computationally intensive, computation times and delay costs of different solving methods were compared for a practical implementation. This research was a collaboration between Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

    Nature-derived epigallocatechin gallate/duck’s feet collagen/hydroxyapatite composite sponges for enhanced bone tissue regeneration

    Scaffolds mimicking structural and chemical characteristics of the native bone tissues are critical for bone tissue engineering. Herein, we have developed and characterized epigallocatechin gallate/duck's feet collagen/hydroxyapatite (EGCG/DC/HAp) composite sponges that enhanced the bone tissue regeneration. The three-dimensional composite sponges were synthesized by loading various amounts (i.e. 1, 5 and 10 μM) of EGCG to duck feet derived collagen followed by freeze-drying and then coating with hydroxyapatite. Several measuremental techniques were employed to examine the properties of the as-fabricated composite sponges including morphology and structure, porosity, compressive strength, etc. and as well compared with pristine duck feet derived collagen. SEM observations of EGCG/DC/HAp sponges showed the formation of a highly porous collagen matrix with EGCG embodiment. The porosity and pore size of sponges were found to increase by high EGCG content. The compressive strength was calculated as 3.54 ± 0.04, 3.63 ± 0.03, 3.89 ± 0.05, 4.047 ± 0.05 MPa for 1, 5 and 10 μM EGCG/DC/HAp sponges, respectively. Osteoblast-like cell (BMSCs isolated from rabbit) culture and in vivo experiments with EGCG/DC/HAp sponges implanted in nude mouse followed by histological staining showed enhanced cell internalization and attachment, cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase expressions, indicating that EGCG/DC/HAp sponges have ahigh biocompatibility. Moreover, highEGCG content in the EGCG/DC/HAp sponges have led to increased cellular behavior.     Glypican-3 level assessed by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is inferior to alpha-fetoprotein level for hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosis

    Background/Aims Glypican-3 (GPC3) protein is highly expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissue. It has been suggested as a diagnostic biomarker, but its inconsistent performance means that it requires further assessment. We therefore investigated the diagnostic value of the plasma GPC3 level compared to the alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level as a diagnostic biomarker of HCC. Methods We enrolled 157 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed HCC and 156 patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) as the control group. GPC3 plasma levels were measured using two commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs, named as Assay 1 and 2), and AFP levels were measured using an enzyme-linked chemiluminescent immunoassay. The diagnostic accuracy was analyzed using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve. Results Plasma GPC3 levels in HCC patients were very low (0–3.09 ng/mL) in Assay 1, while only 3 of the 157 patients (1.9%) showed detectable GPC3 levels in Assay 2. The median GPC3 level was not significantly elevated in the HCC group (0.80 ng/mL) compared with the LC group (0.60 ng/mL). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for GPC3 was 0.559 in Assay 1. In contrast, the median AFP level was significantly higher in HCC (27.72 ng/mL) than in LC (4.74 ng/mL), with an AUC of 0.729. Conclusion The plasma level of GPC3 is a poor diagnostic marker for HCC, being far inferior to AFP. The development of a consistent detection system for the blood level of GPC3 is warranted
